Care of the Elderly Programme
St Joseph’s Day Care Hospital for Older Adults
Beaumont Hospital is predominantly an adult hospital although it does have a children's ward - St. Raphael’s. The population of the catchment area of the hospital is aging at a rate faster than any other in Ireland and with it’s demographic change comes added pressure on the Hospital to provide extra care for this vulnerable sector of society. The Hospital has since 2004 incorporated St. Joseph’s Hospital in Raheny which is, by it’s nature, a quieter division of Beaumont and more suitable for many older adults. Many of the adults who currently attend Beaumont could greatly benefit if a Day Care Hospital was available instead of having to stay overnight in Beaumont. This has the added advantage of bringing care into the community and alleviating pressure on Hospital beds.
A relative of a late friend of Beaumont Foundation saw the merits of this approach and very kindly committed €1.5 million to the Foundation in order to provide such a facility. Together with this commitment the Board of the Foundation agreed to contribute €800,000 to complete this project. Much planning has gone into this project over the last 12 months and at the time of writing, the building has been designed, planning permission has been ongoing, staffing of the new facility has been committed and building will commence before the year end with the new day hospital expected to open in the first half of 2012.
