On arriving at Salzburg Airport, a 45-minute drive brought us to beautiful St Johann. After a welcome meeting we met our guide for the week Hannes, who explained what was in store.
An early start Sunday took us on an orientation tour of St Johann followed by a walk to the Hinterkaiser area. The weather was hot, our guide was entertaining and the scenery was spectacular.
Monday we hiked up to Almhof Sommerer and had breakfast out on the mountain. We then walked to the lake at the middle station of the Gondola.
Tuesdays walk to the Eiffersbacher Waterfalls was something I will always remember. As I crawled to the top, on hands and knees, I finally made it and rewarded myself with an apple! That night we visited the local brewery for a Tyrolean evening.
Wednesday (a well deserved day off) most of the group went into the capital Inns Bruck. Other local options included river rafting, paragliding, horse riding, cycling etc. That evening we had a delicious BBQ in the garden.
Thursday we took a train to Kitzbuhel and walked around Lake Schwarzsee. That night we went to Bunnies Pub for 'ceol agus craic'! FM 104 interviewed the group that night from there.
On Friday we took the gondola lift to the Harschbichl and from there we started our descent via the different Alms. Some of the group hopped on the toboggan run down the mountain.
A good-bye gala dinner was followed by a presentation of awards to the Team who all successfully completed the challenge.
All walks included a packed lunch, a packed itinerary and plenty of
fun.
Accommodation was a short walk from the town which was full of
restaurants, bars, shops, a leisure centre and a beautiful church.
Musts for 2004: a hiking stick! A visit to the church, a good camera, insect repellent, gondola lift, toboggan run, a night in Bunnies & Almbar and a sense of humour!
Some level of training is required, as my poor legs learned very early on; I know they will never forgive me.
