2008 General Grants
All Staff employed by the Hospital were eligible to apply for a Minor Project Grant which benefits patient care.
A budget of €75,000 was allocated with no Grant exceeding €3,000. Grants were awarded towards:
- Purchase of new equipment
- Furnishings
- Educational Literature
A small sample of successful grants are outlined below.
St Damien's Ward
St.
Damien's Ward incorporates 3 diverse specialties - these are Renal/Pancreatic
Transplantation, Urology and Haematology. The Monitor funded by
Beaumont Foundation enables staff to see how their patient is progressing
and helps improve the way care is delivered.
Other Grants funded by the Foundation for St. Damien's benefit many of our patients who have terminal illnesses and families who like to stay with them. For example, Recliners donated by the Foundation allow family members to stay in comfort while giving support to sick relatives.
Physiotherapy Department
The
Pressure Breathing (IPPB) Unit helps staff provide a more efficient
treatment of patients, reducing treatment time and risk of patient deterioration.
This equipment is used in the treatment of respiratory patients, providing
them with positive airway pressure.
Another of our Grants funded the purchase of an anatomical learning tool (skeleton), the benefit of which is the facilitation of a better understanding of patients' own injury/pathology. This will also aid self management of certain patient conditions and prevention of frequent re-referrals.
“...thank you sincerely for the numerous grant allocations given to Physiotherapy this year..... All allocations will assist us greatly in patient care and support the staff in the delivery of same.”
Anne Marie O'Grady, MISCP MHMI Physiotherapy Manager
2007 General Grants - Sample
National Poisons Information Centre
Grants
were used to reprint and distribute 50,000 copies of a Child Poisoning
Prevention leaflet from the National Poisons Information Centre,
run from Beaumont Hospital. The colourful and highly informative leaflet
outlines the potential dangers in the home, gives simple 'Dos and Don'ts'
of poison prevention, and provides emergency advice on what to do if a
child accidentally ingests a poison. Whilst it is difficult to measure
the impact on the prevention of child poisoning, demand for information
is high, particularly among parents, teachers, creches, Public Health
Nurses and in Paediatric A&E.
Another Grant was used to fund the development of a web site for the National Poisons Information Centre available at http://www.poisons.ie
Post-Operative Prosthetics for Breast Cancer Patients
This grant was awarded to the Oncology Department for the purchase of breast care prosthetics for post-surgery breast cancer patients. A Breast Nurse Specialist at Beaumont Hospital takes patients through the sensitive fitting process and then orders the appropriate breast prosthetic for them.
"While it is a physical issue in practical terms, a good fit with the prosthetic can make an important impact on a patient's psychological well being. It's important that we can offer them an accurate fit, and reassure them that they will look 'normal' to the outside world - even after breast surgery."
