Report and Photos on the Mexico Walking Challenge
by Pat Cashman
The recent Beaumont Foundation's Walking Challenge
to Cancun in Mexico was one of the most successful ever undertaken
by the organisation. Following on from the 2004 challenge in Capetown
this year's walk to the Mexican Caribbean was a combination of
four early morning 12 and 20 kilometres walks and an evening walk
on the island of Isla Mujures.
Three of the walks were direct from the El Pueblito Hotel along
the lagoon which separated the Caribbean from the mangrove swamps
and with every turn new views of the sea and lagoons unfolded.
One of the many highlights of the challenge was our walk to the
Mayan ruins of Tulum culminating with a guided tour of the majestic
ruins. Following the walk lunch was served on the beach at Tulum
with a chance to relax after the stress of a rigorous walk. Another
highlight was our walking challenge on Isla Mujures (Women's Island)
walking towards the setting evening sun in the Caribbean.
The El Pueblito was a perfect hotel for the challenge fronting
the beach and with charming staff was a fantastic setting for
the nine day event. All of the group at the final night's dinner
and presentation attended by the First Secretary to the Irish
Embassy in Mexico City, Ruairi de Burca were united in their compliments
for the organisation of the challenge and were looking forward
to the 2006 Walking Challenge in Peru.
