"I can’t begin to tell you what the operation has meant to me. During my time in Beaumont when I was very much alone seeing as I came up from Cork, the staff on St. Anne’s Ward became my friends. They were there to reassure me and keep me company when I was low. I still pop back to say hello when I have to go for check-ups and they always make time to have a chat and say hello."

The Butler Sisters

Sisters, Vera, Amanda, Caroline and Mary Butler wanted to personally thank the doctors and nurses in the CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) Unit in Beaumont Hospital for looking after their late mother, Sharon.

Initially, Sharon’s condition meant that she had to travel from New Ross in Wexford to Waterford Regional Hospital for haemodialysis three times a week. On her return home, she would often feel unwell and be extremely tired.  It would take her a day to recover from the experience and then it would be time to do it all over again. After eight long and very draining months, Sharon was transferred to Beaumont Hospital. On one of her routine appointments to Beaumont Hospital, a nurse mentioned Peritoneal Dialysis to Sharon and it was from this moment on that the family’s life changed for the better.

The CAPD Unit in Beaumont is part of the renal department and allows patients to carry out dialysis in their own homes. This permits them to have a more normal and active lifestyle without the need to travel for dialysis.

Sharon was introduced to Peritoneal Dialysis by the CAPD Unit which allowed her to administer dialysis herself on a nightly basis. This gave the girls back their mother and provided Sharon with a much improved quality of life until the time of her passing.

Speaking about her Mother, Vera Butler says,”Mam became a more energetic, happier and outgoing person once she moved to CAPD. Her life went from being a challenge to get to the local shop to being able to plan ahead for concerts, shows, sporting events and family holidays. She loved camping and caravanning and her portable dialysis machine made all these things possible”.

“In the eight and a half years that Mam received treatment in Beaumont Hospital, she was given great advice, support and help in managing her disease. We wanted to raise funds for Beaumont Hospital Foundation to fund the CAPD Unit in her memory”.
