Vietnam / Singapore Walking Challenge
The
Walk in Ho Chin Minh City was a real eye opener-bicycles, motorbikes,
cars all vying for space on the roads, and at the sides of the road
little tables and chairs for people to stop for their "fast food".
We sailed on the Mekong Delta and then boarded a sampan for fascinating
tour through the vast estuaries of the Delta. On the shores of the Delta
we witnessed daily life how women in conical hats worked in the rice
fields, tased exotic fruit drinks and visted traditional houses and
were amazed at how happy everyone was with their life.
From Ho Chi Minh City, the Presidential Palace , the Notre Dame Cathedral and the historic Post Office, we went to Phan Thiet and Mui Ne for three other walks. Beautiful scenery and a lovely beach where fishermen competed with swimmers to catch their fish quota with their little circular tubs and nets, when the fish were caught the women came and sorted them. We saw the Famous Sand Dunes, Poshanu Cham Tower and walked to the Princes Castle overlooking Phan Thiet. We had a cyclo ride around the main streets of Phan Thiet, visited the Duc Thanh School where Ho Chin Minh taught and our last walk was a trek up Takou Mountain which was a real tough challenge, between the heat and the climb it sorted out the men from the boys.
Afterwards we returned to Ho Chin Ming City to fly to Singapore where we boogied the night away in Raffles before departing home to dear old Ireland.
Thanks to everyone for their participation and support for Beaumont Hospital Foundation.
Big Apple bitten by Beaumont trio
The famous New York marathon is run through the 5 boroughs of New York
City. Starting in the picturesque Staten Island and running through
Brooklyn and Queens, home to many of the Irish in New York before finishing
up in Central Park.
BHF has had participants in the NYC Marathon over many years, this year
we were represented by Aoife Farron, Bill Kelly and Humphrey Moynihan
who took on this big challenge in the city that never sleeps. A special
thank you to Humphrey who this year has completed his fifth NY Marathon
on our behalf and probably knows the city better than his own Carlow
at this stage! Commiserations to all who trained for event but unfortunately
were unable to participate.
Well done everyone and another valuable contribution to patient care
in Beaumont was made on the streets of the Big Apple.
Havana great time in Cuba and raising loads of money
March of 2009 saw 16 volunteers visit the island of Cuba on a walking
challenge which raised €36,000 on behalf of Beaumont Hospital Foundation.
The volunteers also got the opportunity to learn lots about the mysterious
island famed for revolution and cigars as they completed 5 separate
walking challenges of between 12 and 20 kilometres per walk.
The benefits to all are many. BHF receives €36,000 to donate equipment
and technology that improves patient care. Volunteers get to contribute
something to the Hospital that many have built up a special bond with
over the years. While they have already completed the challenge of raising
the funds they now have the challenge of completing the walks and at
the same time learning all about a new country and its culture.
Of course, our patients in Beaumont Hospital get the benefit of new
equipment and technology to help them recover, get back on their feet
or simply improve life for them during a really tough time in their
lives. A big thanks to all our Cuban walking participants.
200 heroes win one mini-marathon
It was a fantastic achievement to see thousands of women participating
in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon on a hot sunny day through the streets
of Dublin on the June Bank Holiday weekend in 2009. 200 volunteers ran
or walked the mini-marathon on behalf of BHF, raising nearly €30,000
while taking part in the 10k course through our capital city.
The mini-marathon has become an iconic event in Dublin every year with
lots of money being raised for many charities. The spirit of Beaumont
Foundation’s army of runners from all over Ireland was epitomised by
the women who participated, many of whom have run year after year for
us and are an inspiration to all.
Who won the race? Who cares? All we know is that 200 people ran on behalf
of our Foundation and the money they raised will directly impact on
patient care in Beaumont Hospital today and into the future. Well done
to all. Every one of you is a gold, silver and bronze winner in our
eyes and in the hearts and minds of our patients.
Balkan walkin’ raises vital funds for patient care
In mid September, 13 volunteers left Ireland to participate in our walking
challenge in Croatia, all in the name of charity and in particular,
the Beaumont Hospital Foundation. With the aim of raising nearly €40,ooo,
walks were organised in the historical city of Dubrovnik and the famous
island of Korcula.
Over the course of one week, our team completed 4 separate walking challenges
of between 12 and 20 kilometres per walk and really got to know this
beautiful country and its kind and welcoming people. Two extended walks
were organised within the wonderful World Heritage city of Dubrovnik
on the Dalmatian coast. A further two excursions covered the island
of Korcula in the Adriatic. Many volunteers also combined their trip
with a journey down to Medjugorje, the famous pilgrimage site.
Once again, another really successful outing for the Foundation and
more proof that our fundraisers not only ‘talk the talk’ but they really
do ‘walk the walk’ too. Well done to all!
Leinster Classic Motorcycle Club raised €27,632 on behalf BHF
During the year we had a group of over 100 members of the Leinster Classic Motorcycle Club travelled from Wicklow to Beaumont Hospital to present Beaumont Foundation with a cheque for €27,632 on behalf of the Club following their successful 7th Annual Fundraising Event.
We are very grateful to the organiser Lenny Fitzpatrick and all the bikers in the Leinster Classic Motorcycle Club for their fantastic achievement.
We would like to take this opportunity to Thank all the people
who organised different Events throughout the year on behalf of Beaumont
Hospital Foundation – Your Support helps Us to Make a Difference on
direct Patient Care in Beaumont Hospital.
